Dimensional Inspection

Once the visual check is done, it’s time for dimensional inspection. Every flange has specific size requirements, and these need to be met exactly. You use tools like calipers and micrometers to measure things like the outer diameter, inner diameter, and thickness of the flange. If these dimensions are off, the flange might not fit with the pipes or other components it’s supposed to connect to.

The bolt hole size and spacing are also important. The bolts are what hold the flanges together tightly. If the bolt holes are too small or too big, or if the spacing between them is incorrect, the bolts won’t install correctly, and the flange connection won’t be secure. You have to make sure the holes are drilled straight and that they’re all the same size and equally spaced around the flange.

Material Inspection

What the flange is made of matters a lot. Different applications call for different materials, like stainless steel for corrosive environments or carbon steel for general – purpose use. When inspecting the material, you might need to do some tests. One common test is a hardness test. Each material has a certain hardness range, and if the flange’s hardness is outside of that range, it could mean there’s something wrong with the material’s quality.

You can also use chemical analysis to check the composition of the material. For example, if it’s supposed to be stainless steel, it should have the right amount of chromium, nickel, and other elements. If the composition is off, the flange might not have the properties it needs, like corrosion resistance.

Another method is pneumatic testing, which uses air or gas instead of water. But pneumatic testing is a bit more dangerous because if there’s a leak, the gas can escape quickly and cause an explosion or other safety issues. So, it has to be done with extra caution.

Surface Finish Inspection

The surface finish of a flange can also affect its performance. A smooth surface finish is often preferred because it helps the gasket make a better seal. If the surface is too rough, the gasket might not be able to fill in all the gaps, and that can lead to leakage. You can use a surface roughness tester to measure how smooth or rough the surface is.

Documentation and Traceability

Throughout the inspection process, it’s really important to keep good records. You need to document all the inspection results, including the visual inspection findings, the dimensional measurements, the material test results, and the pressure test results. This documentation is not only useful for quality control purposes but also for providing evidence of the flange’s quality to your customers.

Traceability is also key. You should be able to track where the raw materials for the flange came from, who manufactured it, and what processes it went through during production.
